LIFE-LONG DEDICATION TO FAMILY BUSINESSES

In addition to his profession as an advisor to family businesses and his numerous publications, Peter May has conducted and initiated various efforts to spread and enhance people’s knowledge concerning family businesses. The most important ones are listed below.

TEACHING

Since 1998, Peter May has regularly given lectures on managing family businesses and business owning families.

He began as a lecturer at UWH in Witten-Herdecke, followed by an occupation as a professor at FHDW in Bergisch-Gladbach. GOVERNANCE CODE FOR
FAMILY BUSINESSES

Good governance is an essential element of the long-term success of family businesses. In 2004, Peter May worked in collaboration with successful family business owners and researchers in order to create the world’s first Governance Code for Family Businesses. He has since taken on the presidency of the commission. The aim of the Governance Code is to give interested family business owners a guideline on how to individually shape their own governance.

The Code is a joint initiative with INTES Akademie für Familienunternehmen, FBN Germany and DIE FAMILIENUNTERNEHMER – ASU. In 2015, the 3rd edition of the Governance Code was published.

FBN

Besides qualification and consultation, the exchange of experiences is a crucial part for the success of business owning families. The world’s biggest organisation in this area- especially in respect to the next generation- is the Family Business Network (FBN).

That is why in 2000, Peter May decided to found FBN Germany, whose managing director he remains to this day.

“UNTERNEHMER-ERFOLGSFORUM”
(FAMILY ENTREPRENEURS’ SUCCESS FORUM)

“Learning from Champions” - that is the motto Peter May employed when he founded the “Family Entrepreneur’s Success Forum” in 1998. The convention aims at bringing together some of the leading family business entrepreneurs from home and abroad. It has been recognised as one of the most crucial meeting points for business owning families in Germany.

As the host of the Family Entrepreneurs’ Success Forum, which is organised annually in November by INTES Akademie für Familienunternehmen in collaboration with FBN Germany and DIE FAMILIENUNTERNEHMER at Schloss Bensberg near Cologne, Peter May remains closely connected to this event.
