“Good governance has a proven positive impact on the economic and emotional value of a family business. That’s why we helped draft the Governance Code for Family Businesses.”
(Karl-Erivan Haub)
Good governance is an indispensable part of the long-term success of family businesses. In order to provide interested business families with guidelines on organizing their governance, in 2004, Peter May, together with well-known family business owners and researchers, created the world’s first Governance Code for Family Businesses and became chairman of the commission.
The Code is a joint initiative with the INTES Family Business Academy, FBN Deutschland and DIE FAMILIENUNTERNEHMER. The 3rd edition of the Code was published in 2015.
Good family business needs role models. With this in mind, and on the initiative of Peter May, in 2004 INTES and impulse launched a prize for the Family Business Owner of the Year. This distinction has become one of the most important awards for family business owners in Germany and is now co-sponsored by FBN Deutschland and DIE FAMILIENUNTERNEHMER.
As jury chairman, Peter May recognizes an exemplary business figure each year.
Ludwig Merckle was selected as Family Business Owner of the Year in 2017.

“Learning from the champions” – Peter May launched the Business Owner Success Forum with this motto in mind in 1998. The congress, jointly organized by the INTES Family Business Academy, FBN Deutschland and DIE FAMILIENUNTERNEHMER at Bensberg Castle near Cologne, brings together leading family business owners from Germany and abroad. It is considered one of the most important family meetings for family business owners in Germany. Together with Peter Bartels, Peter May is the host for the Business Owner Success Forum.
The sharing of experiences among business families is as important to their success as qualification and advice. The world’s largest and best organization in this area – particularly with regard to the next generation – is the Family Business Network (FBN). With this idea in mind, in 2000 Peter May joined friendly family business owners in creating FBN Deutschland, of which he remains the Managing Director.
